Largest Indian gaming conference opens in Ariz.

The National Indian Gaming Association, which represents more than 150 tribes, holds its 12th annual meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, this week.

A reported 2,500 are attending the three-day event. It opened yesterday with speeches about the positive impact of the $12.7 billion Indian gaming industry, but also the threats and dangers faced.

Congressional and public scrutiny has heightened in recent years. NIGA executive director Mark Van Norman said a $2 million study by tribes, for tribes will quiet the "naysayers," The Arizona Republic reported.
