Secretary of Education Rod Paige backed away from statements that said Christian values belong in public schools.

"All things equal, I would prefer to have a child in a school that has a strong appreciation for the values of the Christian community, where a child is taught to have a strong faith," Paige said in the Baptist Press News. "Where a child is taught that, there is a source of strength greater than themselves."

A Paige spokesperson on Tuesday said the quote was accurate. But after facing criticism from civil liberties and education groups, and some members of Congress, Paige called a press conference to say he was only expressing a personal opinion.
