American Indian and other minority families in the Twin Cities have a harder time getting off welfare, according to a study by the Wilder Research Center.

Researchers found that Indian and other minority families stayed on welfare longer than other groups. During a two-year period, 55 percent of Indian families remained on welfare rolls, compared to 35 percent of white families.

Minority families deal with language barriers, lower education, discrimination in employment and health problems, the report said, and the welfare system is not equipped to deal with their needs.
