FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 2003

Senator Joe Lieberman (D-Connecticut) has asked the Department of Interior to look into its ethics policies following reports highlighting questionable behaviors of Deputy Secretary J. Steven Griles.

Griles, a lobbyist for the mining industry, signed recusals barring him from making decisions involving former clients. According to news accounts, however, he met numerous times with old associates and made decisions affecting their interests.

Griles is getting paid $1.1 million a year, on top of his government salary, for old lobbying work.
