THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2003

The Florida Senate gave tentative approval on Wednesday to a bill that rescinds state jurisdiction over Miccosukee tribal lands.

The state currently has civil and criminal jurisdiction over the reservation, a remnant of the termination era. The bill would limit jurisdiction to the tribe and to the federal government.

The Florida House version of the bill retains state jurisdiction over non-Indians.
