John Herrington, the first tribal member to go into space, relishes his status as a role model.

Herrington, a member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma, spoke at the 28th Annual American Indian Council Pow Wow this past weekend at Montana State University. He recalled the people in his life who made a difference.

"Being a Chickasaw and being an astronaut . . . I want them to know this is something that's not out of the realm of possibility for them," he told The Bozeman Daily Chronicle. "Not necessarily becoming an astronaut, but I think people need to realize that their dreams can become a reality."
