Trial begins in murder of Native police officer

TUESDAY, APRIL 22, 2003 A trial into the murder of a Native RCMP officer began in Manitoba, Canada, on Monday. Constable Dennis Strongquill was shot after a routine traffic stop in December 2001. Prosecutors have charged Robert Marlo Sand, 23, and Laurie Ann Bell, 20, with first-degree murder. Strongquill was a member of the all-Native RCMP detachment on the Wawayseecappo First Nation in Manitoba. Including Strongquill, three Aboriginal RCMP officers have died in the line of fire.
