Brun of Red Lake wasn't your ordinary chairman

Friends, associates and tribal officials recalled Gerald "Butch" Brun, the Red Lake Nation chairman who died Saturday, as compassionate, humble and forward-thinking.

Brun, 64, defeated long-time chairman Roger Jourdain in 1990. He started the tribe's casino, encouraged investing and gave away most of his salary, friends said.

Brun once brought home two cubs he found in the woods but was forced to put them in a cage because neighbors complained. To show they weren't dangerous, he slept with them in the pen.
