FRIDAY, MAY 2, 2003

A vote is scheduled today on a bill that would require Indian businesses to remit gas and cigarette tax, The Syracuse Post-Standard reports.

The state courts have ruled that the state has a right to collect the taxes on goods sold to non-Indians. But they also said the state has a legitimate reason not to collect the revenue.

According to proponents of the bill, the state is losing out on $1.4 billion in revenue from Indian-owned businesses.
