New York Governor George Pataki (R) plans to sign an agreement to settle the St. Regis Mohawk land claim and casino rights, according to news reports.

The Albany Times-Union said the tribe will accept $100 million for a 15,000-acre land claim. The state and the federal government would pay $30 million and the New York Power Authority would contribute $70 million.

The tribe would be able to purchase 7,000 acres in the land claim area from willing sellers, the paper said. The Power Authority will transfer some properties to the tribe.

The deal comes with a low-cost power to the Akwesasne Reservation and free state university tuition for tribal members. It also resolves Class III gaming issues at existing tribal casinos and paves the way for an off-reservation casino in the Catskills.
