Blumenthal: Federal recognition process a 'scandal'

THURSDAY, MAY 8, 2003 The federal recognition process is a "scandal," Connecticut attorney general Richard Blumenthal said, The Norwich Bulletin reported. Blumenthal opposes the federal recognition of several state-recognized tribes. He has challenged the Bush administration's decision on the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation but says he is not anti-Indian or anti-gaming. "A tribe that meets the criteria deserves to be recognized," Blumenthal was quoted as saying. "But we will fight a casino where it negatively impacts the towns -- the federal government has failed to respect the sovereignty of the states." Get the Story:
