Mohawk tribe announces $100M deal with N.Y.

TUESDAY, MAY 13, 2003 The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe and the state of New York signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday to settle a long-standing land claim and resolve taxation and gaming issues. The tribe will receive $100 million from the state and federal government for the 15,000-acre claim. The tribe can use the money to purchase 7,000 acres. The agreement authorizes the tribe to collect taxes on cigarettes, fuel and other goods sold on the reservation. Businesses with less than $2 million in revenue are exempted. The state has agreed not to tax wholesalers who do business on the reservation. Finally, the deal clears an off-reservation casino in the Catskills and resolves Class III gaming at the tribe's existing casinos. The deal needs approval by tribal members, the federal government, a federal judge and Congress. Get the Story:
