TUESDAY, MAY 13, 2003

The Minnesota state Senate passed a bill 42-24 to allow continued storage of nuclear waste at a facility next to the Prairie Island Indian Community.

The bill authorizes an agreement between the tribe and Xcel Energy, the operators of the facility. Xcel will pay the tribe more than $1 million a year for as long as the facility is kept open.

The deal also allows the tribe to buy 1,500 acres land within 50 miles of the reservation.
