With less than 200 members remaining, Joe Scovell is in a race to prevent The Clatsop-Nehalem Tribe from fading into obscurity.

Scovell, chairman of the tribe, is hoping the federal government will recognize the tribe, descendants of some of the people who met the Lewis and Clark expedition. But he is doubtful the lengthy Bureau of Indian Affairs process will result in success.

Another route is Congressional recognition. But the tribe's efforts have been met with silence so far.

The Clatsop-Nehalem Tribe was a signatory to an 1851 treaty.
