Rick Lupe, a longtime firefighter on the Fort Apache Reservation in Arizona, is in critical condition after suffering third-degree burns over 40 percent of his body, The Arizona Republic reports.

Lupe was working on a controlled burn on the reservation when he was engulfed in flames. He is being treated at the Arizona Burn Center in Phoenix.

Lupe is credited with helping slow the spread of last year's Rodeo-Chedeski Fire, which burned more than half of the reservation.

Lupe is the forest manager for the White Mountain Apache Tribe.
