N.Y. court puts halt to tribal gaming deals

A New York Supreme Court justice put on hold the state's tribal casino compacts until legal issues can be resolved.

State law authorizes up to three off-reservation casinos in the Catskills. Gov. George Pataki (R) has approved a compact with the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe for one of them.

But opponents question Pataki's power to enter into the agreements. Both sides will prepare additional arguments before further rulings are made.
