WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 2003

Allegations of nepotism and other ethical lapses in the Navajo Nation presidency were referred to the tribe's ethics office, The Gallup Independent reported.

The Navajo Nation Government Services Committee planned a series of public hearings to address charges that President Joe Shirley Jr. and Vice President Frank Dayish Jr. hired close relatives. But after a closed-door session on Monday, the issue was referred to the Ethics-Rules Office, which can keep the information secret.
