WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 2003

Oklahoma tribal leaders are still trying to work out an agreement over tobacco taxes.

Details of the talks largely remain a secret. According to one tribal leader who asked The Daily Oklahoman not to be identified by name, the state is asking tribes to pay a larger tax on goods sold to non-Indians.

Existing compacts with the tribes expired this year.

Separately, state lawmakers and state officials are pursuing Class II/Class III gaming compacts.
