An accurate historical accounting of the Indian trust is impossible due to lost records, a Department of Treasury official said last week.

Donald V. Hammond, a fiscal assistant secretary, testified in the ongoing trust fund trial. He said the Department of Interior needs to manage the system better.

The trial is being held in Washington, D.C., to focus on how to reform the system and how to account for the Individual Indian Money (IIM) trust. The plaintiffs are still calling witnesses.
