Woman chosen to lead Tohono O'odham Nation

TUESDAY, MAY 27, 2003 Members of the Tohono O'odham Nation of Arizona chose their first woman chair in a resounding vote on Saturday. According to The Arizona Daily Star, Vivian Juan-Saunders and running mate Ned Norris Jr. carried eight of the tribe's 11 voting districts. Incumbent chairman Edward D. Manuel and vice chairman Henry A. Ramon only won two districts. One district was a tie. Juan-Saunders and Norris are newcomers to tribal politics compared to Manuel and Ramon, who ran the tribe for eight years. Get the Story:
