Opinion: Tribes are governments not businesses

MONDAY, JUNE 9, 2003 "Indian tribes in Minnesota are constantly misrepresented and subjected to an unfair double standard. Gary Larson's May 25 Op Ex article, "Tribes' influence leads DFL to pass up a revenue source," is typical of how the uninformed perpetuate gross misconceptions about the tribal governments in Minnesota.We keep hearing how the tribes enjoy a "monopoly" over casino gaming. "Monopoly" is a business term not applicable to governments. Larson forgets that the tribes, like states, are not corporations but sovereign governments. Tribal casinos are government entities raising government revenues for government purposes. No one complains that the state has a "monopoly" over the lottery." Get the Story:
