Warm Springs tribal members dying at younger age

MONDAY, JUNE 9, 2003 The life expectancy for members of the Confederated Warm Springs Tribes of Oregon is dramatically lower than the rest of the state, The Bend Bulletin reports. According to a study by a local doctor, the average age of death between 1991 and 2000 was almost 47. But the average age of death in Oregon in 2001 was 74, according to state statistics. The number one cause of death for tribal members was accidents. Diabetes and diabetes-related complications ranked second while heart disease was third. In Indian Country, life expectancy s ranges from a low of 64.3 years to a high of 76.3 years, according to a study by the University of North Dakota. Get the Story:
