WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 2003

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee today will consider the nomination of Dr. Charles Grim as director of the Indian Health Service.

Grim, a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, has been interim IHS director since last August. He joined the IHS the early 1980s.

Grim is currently overseeing a restructuring of the IHS and his agency is part of a consolidation initiative affecting the entire Department of Health and Human Services. About 200 human resources positions at IHS are being transferred to HHS, losing their Indian preference status in the process.

Grim replaces Dr. Michael Trujillo, of Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico, who left last summer.

Today's hearing starts at 10:00 a.m. A live video feed can be found at http://indian.senate.gov
