Murkowski vetoes Alaska Native land purchase

FRIDAY, JUNE 13, 2003 Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski (R) vetoed a $10.4 million land deal that would benefit Alaska Native corporations. With the money, the Exxon Valdez Trustee Council was to buy 18,000 acres of land and purchase timber rights on 2,000 acres of corporation-owned land on Afognak Island. Corporation executives said the money would help shareholders because of the sagging timber market. Murkowki's veto was contained in the state budget. Get the Story:
