Can. committee calls for end to Native fishery

FRIDAY, JUNE 13, 2003 A new report from a Canadian Parliament committee calls for an end to the Native-only fishery in British Columbia. Tom Wappel, chair of the House of Commons standing committee on fisheries and oceans, says the project has failed to stop poaching by Native fishermen and has failed to stabilize the industry. Ken Malloway, co-chair of the B.C. Aboriginal Fisheries Commission, disagreed and said Natives are complying. The Native salmon fishery was created 10 years ago on the Fraser River. Non-Native contend it is unfair and discriminatory. Get the Story:
