TUESDAY, JULY 1, 2003 The Shinnecock Nation of New York broke ground on a casino in the Hamptons despite a restraining order filed against tribal leaders by the state attorney general. The state contends the casino site is not located on the tribe's reservation and forbade the tribe from moving forward without a permit. The tribe said it will file a lawsuit in federal court to build the casino. The tribe is state recognized and is waiting for the Bureau of Indian Affairs to act on its petition for federal status.
