TUESDAY, JULY 1, 2003

Zuni Pueblo has filed comments with the state of New Mexico, protesting the drilling of monitoring water wells near the sacred Zuni Lake.

The tribe says Salt River Project has tapped into the wrong aquifer. The company wants to build an 18,000-acre coal mine near the lake.

The Department of Interior gave approval for the development but places limits on the water sources the company can use in order to protect the lake.
