Shipwreck forces shutdown of Native fishery

THURSDAY, JULY 3, 2003

A commercial ship ran aground in Alaska's Kachemak Bay last week, destroying the salmon fishery for two Native villages.

The ship spilled some diesel and oil and fears of a large disaster prompted the state to close down fishing just as the villages of Port Graham and Nanwalek were seeing one of the best runs of sockeye salmon in recent years.

The mess has been cleaned up and the fishery will reopen today but the fish have already moved upstream.
