Wis. paper seeks to make casino audits public

THURSDAY, JULY 3, 2003 The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has asked the state of Wisconsin to make tribal casino audits public. The paper asked the Department of Administration to release the financial information, which is collected as part of the state's compacts with tribes. The request was denied on the grounds of the confidentiality provisions of the compacts. The case is similar to one in Minnesota, where an appeals court said public interest in the audits outweighs the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988. The state's Supreme Court has let the ruling stand. Get the Story:
