Editorial: Trust fund settlement bill 'disgraceful'

Legislation to settle the Cobell trust fund lawsuit denied American Indians their legal rights, The Denver Post says in an editorial.

"Last week, the subcommittee that writes the U.S. Interior Department's budget voted to let the Interior secretary unilaterally decide any claim arising from the department's Indian trust account management," the paper says. "The plan would leave Indians with almost no right to review the settlements or challenge the decisions in court."

The paper says that Congress will eventually have to fund a settlement to the seven-year-old case. But so far, the paper says the government has done little to fix the broken trust fund system.
