Fire threatens Taos Pueblo and its sacred sites

MONDAY, JULY 7, 2003 Fire crews in northern New Mexico are battling a blaze that is threatening homes in Taos Pueblo and a sacred lake. The 1,500-acre Encebado Fire was started last week by lightning. It is burning within clear sight of the main tribal village and within 10 miles of Blue Lake, one of the Pueblo's most important sites. No homes have been evacuated yet. Tribal leaders fear the main village's sole source of water is contaminated. Get the Story:
