Man deeds land in Iowa to Chippewa tribal group

TUESDAY, JULY 8, 2003 An Iowa man who has refused to clean up his four-acre property says it is now the sovereign territory of the Little Shell Pembina Band of North America. Larry Bell says the city doesn't have jurisdiction over the land, which city officials say is littered with garbage. The Pembina Band is not state or federally recognized. It has been accused of supplying illegal driver's licenses, vehicle registration and insurance coverage in North Dakota. The group is not the same as the Little Shell Tribe of Montana, whose federal recognition is being finalized. Get the Story:
