The Mississippi Band of Choctaws has been named a finalist in Harvard University's Honoring Nations Program for two programs that combat social problems.

The tribe's Community Injury Prevention program and Family Violence and Victim's Services program were started in response to high rates of accidents, deaths and family violence. Initial reports show they appear to be working: drinking and driving rates dropped almost 72 percent and there have been no accidental poisonings, according to the Associated Press.

The winners for the awards program, sponsored by the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development, will be announced in November.
