Federal lawsuit over Indian Country dismissed

TUESDAY, JULY 15, 2003 A federal judge in Iowa dismissed a lawsuit seeking to declare a plot of land as Indian Country. A couple deeded their four-acre property to the Little Shell Pembina Band of North America. They said state and local officials had no jurisdiction to force a cleanup of their land, which is reportedly riddled with garbage. The Little Shell band is not federally recognized and was recently cited in North Dakota for issuing illegal driver's licenses, vehicle registration and insurance coverage. Get the Story:
