Revels Lumbee leader remembered for life's work

WEDNESDAY, JULY 16, 2003 A memorial service was held on Tuesday for William Lonnie Revels Sr., a Lumbee leader who fought for fair treatment of Native Americans and for federal recognition of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. Revels died of cancer last Thursday. He was 67. According to The Fayetteville Observer, an aide to Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) said a hearing on the tribe's federal status will be held in September. Dole is a sponsor of a bill to recognize the tribe. Get the Story:
