Boy Scouts seeking more Indians and minorities

WEDNESDAY, JULY 16, 2003

The American Indian Scouting Association is holding its second annual meeting in Montana, drawing an estimated 250 adults and children for the five-day seminar.

A national Boy Scouts of America adviser is attending the meeting and said the organization wants to recruit more American Indians and minorities. There are no statistics on how many Natives belong to the Boy Scouts or the Girl Scouts.

The American Indian Scouting Association is working on a national level with the Order of the Arrow, a group of Boy Scouts that follow "Indian" traditions and participate in "Indian" ceremonies. Some consider the order offensive.
