WEDNESDAY, JULY 16, 2003

The state of New York and a town in the Hamptons are trying to stop the Shinnecock Nation from building a casino.

The tribe is state recognized and says it is free to manage its 79-acre reservation the way it wants. But the state and local officials say the tribe has to comply with zoning and environmental laws.

The state also says the tribe needs federal recognition before moving forward with a casino. The tribe's petition is active before the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
