Indian affairs minister Robert Nault said Phil Fontaine's election as chief of the Assembly of First Nations will bring about positive changes in the federal-tribal relationship.

Nault stopped dealing with ousted AFN chief Matthew Coon Come, who was highly critical of the federal government.

Fontaine says AFN needs to improve its dealings with federal officials but also says the government can't make changes without consulting Native leaders.
