N.Y. tribe opens museum

JUNE 25, 2001 The Shinnecock Nation of New York opened a museum dedicated to tribal history and culture on June 16. Pitching in with funds was the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut. The tribe provided a $200,000 grant. The Shinnecock raised an additional $100,000 but more money is needed. The tribe is state recognized and has been seeking federal acknowledgment for two decades.
