JUNE 8, 2000 Kiowa author N. Scott Momaday spoke before the Oklahoma Supreme Court's Sovereignty Symposium in Tulsa on Wednesday. His speech focused on who will define Indians in the future and the implications on sovereignty. Momaday said "I will not let anyone else define me." He was also quoted as saying "We must escape the definition of ourselves by others, and we must embrace our own ... sovereignty, whether we are talking about individuals or communities or nations." Momaday won the Pulitzer Prize in 1969 for "House Made of Dawn." Get the Story:
