"The Heartsong of Charging Elk" by James Welch tells the story of Charging Elk, a fictional Lakota man who tours with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show in the late 1800s and gets left behind while on a stop in France.

A "wannabe," as described by Welch, who attended a book reading in 1994, inspired him to write the story.
