OCTOBER 11, 2000

Since being named the worst in terms of test performance in the state of South Dakota, the Smee school district on the Standing Rock Reservation has taken steps to improve conditions.

Test scores in fourth and eighth grade have improved. Attendance rates have also improved from about 50 percent to more than 90 percent.

The district credits changing the attitudes of students, parents, and staff in affecting the performance of the students. A new $7.1 million building is also raising hopes.
