A number of school districts in New Mexico with large Native American populations have received $42.3 million, the result of a lawsuit challenging public school construction funding.

Gov. Gary Johnson signed a law that was a compromise to the lawsuit. But because the law requires all schools, and not the state's poorest, to compete for the same pot of money, a lawyer for the Zuni Public School district on the Zuni Reservation says it will end up hurting his schools.

Of the 17 districts that were awarded money, Gallup-McKinley County Public Schools received $8.1 million, the largest amount. The money will be used mostly to rebuild Navajo Elementary School and Tohatchi Middle School.

Zuni schools received $1.7 million.
