After experiencing a decrease, the number of minority applicants, including Native Americans, to medical schools has increased slightly.

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the number of African-American, Mexican-American, Puerto Rican, and American Indian applicants to medical school for the 2000-2001 school year increased by 1.9 percent. The number had been on a decline for the past three years.

Still the AAMC says the overall number of under-represented minorities in medical schools has dropped 15 percent since 1994.
