OCTOBER 30, 2000

Educators and students from throughout the country are meeting in South Dakota for the annual National Indian Education Association Convention, which opened on Sunday.

Martin Brokenleg, professor of Native American studies at Augustana, gave the opening address. He said teens need to have a sense of belonging, or they will turn to gangs and other negative behaviors.

Olympic athlete Billy Mills participated in a fun run on Sunday. Paul LaRoche and his group Brule, who are nominated for Duo or Group of the Year in the Native American Music Awards, peformed a concert.

Today, author Joy Harjo will address the convention, which has brought together about 3,500, including 800 students. Blues-rock group Indigenous, also up for the same award, will perform tonight.
