Sacred masks repatriated

OCTOBER 30, 2000

The Smithsonian Institution has repatriated seven sacred Chugach masks to the Chugach Alaska Corporation.

The seven wood masks are the only known masks members of the tribe have. Because wood doesn't preserve well, many Chugach artifacts haven't survived over time.

The masks were taken from burial caves in the late 1800s.
