OCTOBER 31, 2000

Kevin Gover addressed the National Indian Education Association conference on Monday, and said funding for a counseling program will help end the cycle of dysfunctional behavior brought on by boarding schools.

As part of the 2001 Department of Interior Appropriations Bill, some $2.9 million will fund six pilot programs for the therapeutic residential project. The project hopes to boost academic performance and change behaviors of students at BIA schools.

To be considered eligible for the program, a school must have at least 75 students boarding five nights a week. The program might begin as early as August 2001, said Gover.
