Little known among the general public but well known among Indian journalists and the academic community are Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum's editorials calling for the extermination of American Indians.

Baum's two editorials were published in his own newspaper, called The Saturday Pioneer of Aberdeen, South Dakota. Written in the wake of the massacre at Wounded Knee, Baum calls Indians a "pack of whining curs" and said the annihilation of American Indians would naturally come with the death of Sitting Bull.

When the Oz Entertainment Co. was contacted by the Lawrence Journal-World to comment about the editorials and the company's plan to create a theme park, spokesperson Kristin McCallum said they weren't relevant.
