Hawaiians welcomed at conference

NOVEMBER 1, 2000 Native Hawaiians have always been invited to the National Indian Education Association conference, but this year marks the first time they are voting members, a change coinciding with greater recognition of sovereign rights of Native Hawaiians. The week-long conference, which is being held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, included a powwow on Tuesday evening. Some 24 Native Hawaiians marched in the powwow's Grand Entry. Get the Story:
