DECEMBER 1, 2000

Several Utah state lawmakers and officials, including a county commission who is Navajo, have filed a lawsuit against a measure requiring state business to be conducted in English.

The group says Initiative A is too vague and government officials won't know how to implement it. It allows exceptions for education, health, safety, tourism, and in legal proceedings.

Voters in the state approved the measure by 67 percent. But voters in San Juan County, part of the Navajo Nation, turned it down and the commissioner, Mark Maryboy, says the measure amounts to stealing Navajo language and culture.
